The West 5th Weekender No. 15
Emily Deisler
Happy Sunday, friend!
Another weekend is wrapping up, and fall is in full swing!
I don't know if it's all the Christmas illustrations happening in my studio lately, but I'm starting to crave Christmas music, twinkling lights, and pulling out the decorations. Don't get me wrong, I'm not ready to rush through fall, but holiday movies are getting dangerously close to making an appearance around here.
This week, I'm sharing a little Christmas magic from behind the scenes with a peek at one of the biggest parts of my business at West 5th Creative: custom holiday card illustrations!
Grab your coffee and let's catch up!
WHAT I’M WEARING
THE COZIEST THING I OWN
I broke out my fuzzy kimono robe for the first time this week, and it reminded me just how much I love this thing. This is my official “house coat,” and we're heading into our third chilly season together. It's ridiculously soft, wonderfully warm, and basically like wearing a blanket around the house. If you're starting your Christmas wish list, add this one! It comes in several fun patterns and is one of my favorite gifts to give.
WHAT I’M LOVING
I’ve always struggled with muscle cramps and nerve pain, and while taking magnesium regularly and staying hydrated helps, sometimes I need a little extra support. Lately, I’ve been loving these electrolyte drink mixes. They feel like a little afternoon treat, especially when I’m trying to convince myself I don't need a third cup of coffee.

WHAT I’M CREATING
Christmas has officially arrived at the West 5th studio! Never mind that it's only October. When you illustrate Christmas cards for a living, the holiday season starts in July.
This week I finished a custom Christmas card featuring a family of THIRTEEN! I think that might be the record for a full body card illustration?
One of my favorite things about creating these cards is taking a collection of family photographs and turning them into one cohesive illustration. No coordinating outfits, no bribing children to smile, and no trying to get everyone to look at the camera at the same time. You're welcome, moms everywhere.
A Little Behind the Scenes
Each card begins with your photographs. From there, I work on bringing everyone together into a composition that feels balanced, playful, and personal. The background options vary depending on what is ordered. It can be custom, or one from the collection.
The little details are what make these illustrations special. Hairstyles, favorite outfits, and the characteristics that make each family member recognizable all come together to tell your family's story. I ask my clients to send me a few little easter eggs to include that are special to them. Went on safari? Let’s tell the story!
And while the finished artwork makes a pretty adorable Christmas card, my favorite part is that it doesn't have to disappear when the decorations come down. It's a family portrait you can frame and enjoy long after December. I send every client an 8x10 of the artwork with the words removed as a keepsake.
Your Family, Illustrated
If you've been thinking about doing something a little different for your Christmas cards this year, I'd love to create something special for your crew!
My custom illustrated Christmas cards are available to order now, and with the holiday season approaching, it's a great time to get started. Orders close in November!
